Ghost Recon Returns with Tencent-Backed Development

I remember picking up Ghost Recon: Breakpoint on launch day, full of hope and nostalgia, only to put it down in frustration just a few hours later. Buggy, bland, and way too grindy. But over time, updates made it playable again—maybe even enjoyable. So hearing that a new Ghost Recon is officially in the pipeline? It hits a little different.

Good to know

  • Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed a new Ghost Recon is in development.
  • The game appears to be part of Ubisoft’s broader live service strategy.
  • Tencent’s investment is backing multiple projects, including the upcoming Ghost Recon.

At a recent shareholders’ meeting, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot responded to a question about the company’s direction with live service games. He name-checked Rainbow Six: Siege as a model, then casually added that Ubisoft plans to build on its momentum with future launches—including The Division and Ghost Recon.

That brief mention might not seem like much, but it’s the clearest signal yet that Ghost Recon is officially back in development. Ubisoft CFO Frederick Duguet later backed it up, saying that Tencent’s recent investment will help fund the next wave of major Ubisoft titles—and Ghost Recon is right there in that list.

Ubisoft has not said whether this new game is the same one that has been floating around in rumor mills under the codename “OVER,” which was reportedly being built by Ubisoft Paris as early as 2021. If it is the same game, it has been cooking for a while.

What we do know is that Ubisoft is pushing hard on live service models. With Siege and The Division 2 still pulling in active players and regular content drops, a live service approach to Ghost Recon feels all but guaranteed. In fact, Breakpoint itself eventually shifted into that model, offering major content updates long after its rocky start.

Even though Breakpoint stumbled out of the gate, Ubisoft managed to patch things up over time. That might be why the company is willing to give the series another go—this time with a clearer long-term strategy.

The announcement comes alongside news that Ubisoft is shifting resources and setting up new projects with support from Tencent. That investment, made earlier this year, gives Tencent a 25% stake in a new Ubisoft subsidiary focused on several major franchises like Assassin’s Creed, Far Cry, Rainbow Six, and yes—Ghost Recon.

There is still no release window, no title, and no gameplay details. But the confirmation alone is enough to stir interest. After all, Ubisoft has a chance to get it right this time. A reboot, maybe? Or something built from the ground up for live service?
